Prenatal Care: What to Expect
Dr. Anyaegbunam is deeply honored to be a part of this most important, life-changing time in your life, and he is proud to be able to use his experience and training to help make yours a successful delivery.
Your prenatal visits are vitally important not only to your baby's health, but yours as well. During your first and second trimesters, you will be scheduled for prenatal visits once every four weeks. During the third trimester, visits may be every two weeks until week 36, at which time they will be weekly until delivery. This schedule may be altered to include more visits if you experience conditions that warrant close monitoring such as high blood pressure or preeclampsia.
At your first visit, which should be completed around your eighth week of pregnancy, Dr. Anyaegbunam will take your complete health history, explain prenatal diagnostic testing options, run any lab work including a pregnancy test and blood draws, and answer any questions you may have. This will be your longest visit.
Second trimester visits (weeks 14-27) will include monitoring the baby’s heartbeat, prenatal testing if desired, a glucose test, blood pressure monitoring, and growth rate examination. Dr. Anyaegbunam will estimate the size and growth rate of your baby by measuring the distance between your pubic bone and the top of your uterus. Any concerns will be addressed at these appointments and Dr. Anyaegbunam will provide educational materials to help guide you throughout your remaining weeks.
During your third trimester, Dr. Anyaegbunam will monitor your blood pressure, urine, and fetal position to ensure that your baby and body is preparing for a safe birth. Testing will be performed to check for group B strep and any other conditions you may be at risk for developing. Physical exams may be performed if any health concerns arise or after the pregnancy has come full term to check on dilation, effacement, and softening. Your birth plan as well as labor and delivery concerns will be discussed during this last trimester.
